Stonehouse sits on the western edge of the Cotswolds, where the hills start to level out towards the Severn Vale, and it makes a practical base rather than a chocolate-box stop. The canal and railway shaped the town, and that working character still shows in its streets. What you get in return is convenience: within roughly two miles you'll find around 30 places to eat and drink, nine places worth visiting, eight useful services, six activities and a handful of places to stay and shop. It's the sort of town where you can sort out lunch, a walk and a coffee without much planning, and where the surrounding villages and towpaths are only a few minutes away.

For a good few hours, start with breakfast or coffee at The Gatehouse Café, then walk off the morning along the canal before finding a quiet bench at Rest Garden. Come lunchtime, SIX Bath Road is a reliable choice, or head out to Eastington Farm Shop if you'd rather browse local produce and take something home.
