Middleyard sits on the western edge of a Cotswold spur, just a couple of miles south of Stroud, as part of the larger King's Stanley parish.

It works well as a quiet base for exploring the area without the busier atmosphere of larger towns.

What makes it worthwhile is its genuine sense of being a working village rather than a tourist destination. Around 175 houses are scattered across both the western and eastern edges of the hill, giving the place a loose, organic feel. You'll find local facilities here and genuine community life, which means you get a real flavour of how people actually live in the Cotswolds rather than visiting a sanitised version.

The hillside position offers good walking opportunities, with paths leading through the surrounding countryside and down into the valleys. From here, you're well-positioned to explore Stroud itself, which sits just north and has excellent independent shops, galleries, and restaurants. The wider area offers plenty of access to the kind of countryside walking the Cotswolds are known for.

If you're after somewhere to stay or base yourself that feels authentically local rather than polished for visitors, this is worth considering. You'll experience the quieter side of the region while still being close enough to proper amenities and attractions in nearby Stroud.
