This small village in the Forest of Dean area takes its name from the Stanley family, who wielded considerable power here during the Tudor and Stuart periods.

The connection is particularly strong through Anne Stanley, born in 1580, whose life encompassed both prominence and hardship. Daughter of the Earl of Derby, she was even considered as a potential heir to Elizabeth I, though her later years became difficult when her second husband, the Earl of Castlehaven, faced serious criminal charges in the 1630s.

Kings Stanley functions as a living village rather than a preserved historical site, and walking through it reveals centuries of English history layered into its stone buildings and surrounding landscape. The parish church serves as a good starting point for understanding how the area developed over time. The village sits conveniently positioned between Stroud and Gloucester, so you can easily explore it as part of a wider tour of the region.

What gives Kings Stanley its appeal is the genuine sense of ongoing life it maintains, demonstrating how a small English community has changed and adapted while keeping its essential character. You can really see here how everyday activities unfolded in the shadow of the major historical events that were happening elsewhere in the country, which gives the place a grounded, human quality that many villages have lost.
