Stonehouse is a working market town in the Stroud District that serves as a practical base for exploring the Cotswolds while offering its own modest appeal.

The railway station runs regular services to London, and the M5 motorway is just 2.5 miles away, making it convenient if you're moving between different parts of the region.

The town has expanded considerably in recent years and now blends into the neighbouring Ebley area, though it retains its own identity with a functioning town centre. You'll find shops, cafes, and pubs here, along with decent amenities. The surrounding areas include the sub-villages of Bridgend to the south and Ryeford to the east, both worth exploring on foot.

What makes Stonehouse valuable for visitors is its position between bigger attractions. Gloucester city centre lies about 9 miles north, offering cathedral architecture and riverside walks, while Stroud—known for its independent shops, galleries, and Sunday farmers market—is just 4 miles east. The surrounding countryside has walking routes through typical Cotswolds landscape, and the Stroudwater Navigation canal nearby provides a pleasant towpath for a stroll.

Rather than a destination in its own right, Stonehouse works best as a stopping point where you can find accommodation and food without the premium prices of more touristy towns, then venture out to explore the wider area properly.
