around Cranham

Cranham sits in the wooded folds of the Cotswold escarpment above Gloucester, a small settlement where beech hangers give way to open grassland and the lanes stay narrow enough to slow you right down. It's walking country first and foremost, but you won't be short of reasons to stop: within about two miles you'll find ten places worth visiting, five spots to eat and drink, five places to stay, a couple of activity providers and a handful of everyday services. Come for a morning and you'll likely stay for the day, particularly in late spring when the common is at its best.

A good few hours might begin on Cranham Common, where the limestone grassland and old quarry hollows reward an unhurried circuit and a decent pair of boots. From there, drop down towards Prinknash Park and Saint Peter's Grange, where the monastic buildings and grounds give you a quieter sort of interest, then settle in at The Monastery Café for coffee and something warm. If you've time left, Poetry Corner is a short detour and a fitting place to finish before you head back to the car.
