Great Witcombe

This small village sits between Gloucester and Cheltenham in the heart of Gloucestershire's rolling countryside.

Drive down the narrow lanes here and you'll pass dry stone walls with fields opening out on either side—it feels genuinely removed from the main tourist routes.

The main reason to visit is the Roman villa, one of the finest examples in the region. The remains date back to the fourth century, and while you'll mainly see earthworks and foundations rather than standing structures, they give a real sense of how Romano-British landowners lived during the later empire. A small museum on site displays finds from excavations, which helps piece together the story. The location itself—on a gentle slope overlooking the valley—shows why someone chose to build here nearly two thousand years ago.

Beyond the archaeology, Great Witcombe works well as a walking base. The village is surrounded by farmland and woodland, with several footpaths heading out into the Cotswolds escarpment. It's quiet and unhurried, which means you won't find shops or restaurants here, but that's rather the appeal if you're after a genuine escape. Gloucester to the west and Cheltenham to the east both offer proper facilities and are easily reached by car.

It's worth visiting if you're interested in Roman Britain or simply want to explore the countryside away from the busier tourist trails.
