This walking route follows the path that inspired composer Gustav Holst, taking you from Cranham Church across the Cotswold countryside to Crickley Hill.
Holst was born nearby in Cheltenham, and this walk traces landscapes that shaped his musical imagination.
Starting at Cranham Church, you'll make your way through rolling fields and woodland, with expansive views opening up across the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The terrain is moderate, so you can take your time exploring—most people spend a good few hours on the route. As you climb toward Crickley Hill, the views improve considerably, and on clear days you can see right across the Severn Vale toward the Black Mountains.
Crickley Hill itself repays a proper visit. It's an Iron Age hill fort, so you're literally walking over ancient history. The site is now a designated nature reserve, which means you'll often spot unusual birds and rare plants alongside the archaeological interest. The hilltop offers some genuinely memorable panoramas once you reach the top.
After your walk, you're perfectly positioned to explore nearby Cheltenham, known for its Regency architecture and its calendar of festivals. Alternatively, head into Gloucester to see the historic cathedral and the riverside setting. It's an excellent way to combine outdoor walking with local heritage and history.
