Witcombe sits on the edge of the Cotswold scarp, where the lanes running out of Brockworth begin to climb towards the hills. It's a small place with a good deal on its doorstep: within roughly two miles you'll find 19 places to visit, 12 spots to eat and drink, five places to stay, six services, three shops and one activities venue. That mix makes it a practical base rather than a destination in itself — somewhere to fill up the car, sleep well and set out early, with the wider Gloucester and Cheltenham fringe close at hand.

A few hours here works best if you start with the buildings. Brockworth Court and the church of St George sit together, and both reward a slow walk around before you head anywhere else. From there it's a short hop to Brockworth Garden Centre if you want to browse plants or pick up something for the garden, and Spice Master is the obvious stop when you're ready to eat.
