High above the village of Bentham lies an archaeological site that reaches back nearly two thousand years.
Rather than standing ruins, this Roman complex – thought to have been a temple or small settlement – reveals itself through the landscape itself. Walking across the open ground, you can make out gentle rises and depressions marking where walls and buildings once stood, evidence of a settlement that would have been significant during Roman occupation of the Cotswolds.
The site rewards a contemplative visit. There's something absorbing about standing in a place where daily life unfolded so long ago, even if what remains requires you to piece together the story from the land's topography. It's quieter and less visited than some other Roman sites in the region, which means you get a more reflective experience of the archaeology rather than navigating crowds.
The views across the countryside from up here are genuinely worth the walk on their own. It's the kind of place that works well for a slower afternoon – you can take your time exploring the earthworks, sit with the views, and let the history sink in. Cheltenham and Gloucester are both nearby and offer plenty of places to eat, stay, and explore further if you're making a longer trip of it.
