When you're ready for a proper walk with impressive views, head to Birdlip on the Cotswold Scarp's western edge.
This steep escarpment really defines the landscape, and Crickley Hill Country Park sits right at its heart — it's an excellent spot to spend a day outdoors.
The views from the top are genuinely striking. On a clear day you can see right across the Severn Vale all the way to the Malvern Hills and beyond. Walking here is straightforward thanks to well-kept paths that take you through woodland and grassland. The chalky soil supports some unusual plants and wildlife worth keeping an eye out for as you explore.
There's real history woven into this landscape too. An Iron Age hill fort once stood here, and you can still make out the ancient ramparts. Archaeological work over the years has revealed evidence of human occupation stretching back thousands of years, which gives you a tangible sense of how long people have been drawn to this spot. The visitor centre and cafe are convenient when you need a rest and refreshment.
Getting there is straightforward. Cheltenham and Gloucester are both just a short drive away, so this works well as a stop if you're moving around the wider Cotswolds area rather than being a major detour.
