Cold Slad is a small hamlet that opens up access to some genuinely significant natural spaces in the Cotswolds.
The real draw here is Barrow Wake and Crickley Hill, a 140-acre nature reserve designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. That designation means the geology and wildlife actually matter from a scientific perspective, not just because they're pleasant to encounter.
The reserve is well looked after by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and the National Trust working together, so the walking routes are maintained and you'll find proper interpretation as you go. The Cotswold Way National Trail runs straight through the site, and you'll get good valley views along the way. What you see changes with the seasons—bird species come and go, wildflowers appear, and you can observe the limestone formations that shaped this whole landscape.
The quarrying history here is genuinely fascinating. Places like Tuffleys Quarry show you the layers of Cotswold limestone that was extracted and used to build the honey-colored buildings you see throughout the region. Walking the reserve gives you a real sense of where those materials came from and how the landscape was shaped by that work over time.
The hamlet itself is tiny, but its location works well for exploring this part of the Cotswolds. Cheltenham and Gloucester are both nearby if you need shops, restaurants, or somewhere to stay for a longer visit. It's definitely worth a stop if you enjoy walking and want to understand the natural foundations of the area.
