Dryhill Roman Villa

in Bentham

Illustration — photo coming soon

Just outside Bentham, a short journey from Cheltenham or Gloucester, stands the remains of a substantial Roman villa that once served as an important agricultural and residential estate.

Archaeological work over the years has revealed the layout of what was clearly a grand corridor villa, uncovering artefacts that tell us about the sophisticated Roman presence in the Cotswolds and the scale of life here nearly two thousand years ago.

Much of the villa's structure has been reburied to protect it, but you can still trace its footprint across the site. Walking around gives you a real sense of what a bustling estate operation might have looked like, from the architectural sophistication to the practical concerns of running a substantial property in this landscape. You'll get a feel for the engineering and daily existence that unfolded here.

The site is a Scheduled Monument, officially recognised for its national importance. It's the kind of place that rewards a quiet visit, where you can stand and think about the layers of history literally beneath your feet. The rolling hills surrounding the villa haven't changed dramatically since Roman times, which somehow makes the connection to that distant past feel more tangible. Standing here, you're getting a genuine sense of how the land itself has carried these stories forward through the centuries.
