Devil's Table

Up on the Cotswold Edge near Birdlip sits Devil's Table, a viewpoint that delivers exactly what its dramatic name promises.

From this high point on the ancient scarp marking the western boundary of the Cotswolds, you get sweeping views across the Severn Vale towards the Malvern Hills and, when conditions are right, all the way to the Black Mountains. It's one of those spots where you can stand and let your eyes travel across miles of rolling countryside with nothing but space between you and the horizon.

The location has commanded attention for centuries because of its natural position on the landscape. The Romans were active in the area, so it's quite possible they stood here taking in these same views. Today it works brilliantly as a waypoint for walking, with sections of the Cotswold Way accessible from here whether you're after a serious ramble or just a gentle stroll with extraordinary scenery as your backdrop.

Access is straightforward, just off the A417, making it an easy stop if you're driving through. It works equally well as a standalone visit or combined with exploring Birdlip village itself. You're also well positioned for reaching Gloucester or Cheltenham, both within reasonable distance, so it slots neatly into a broader day out in the region.
