Coberley sits in the folds of the hills south of Cheltenham, a small settlement of stone cottages and long views where the escarpment begins to drop away. It's the kind of place you come to for air and quiet rather than a high street: within about two miles you'll find a dozen places to visit, four spots to eat and drink, three activity venues, three services, one shop and somewhere to stay. That balance tells you what to expect — walking, ancient landscape and a round of golf are the main business here, with the church and the barrow giving you a sense of just how long people have been living on this stretch of ground.

A good few hours might start at St. Giles, tucked behind a farmyard and reached through an archway, before you follow the lanes up towards Coberley Long Barrow and the wider views across the Churn valley. Golfers can make a longer day of it at Cotswold Hills Golf Club or Ullenwood Manor Golf Course, both close by. Afterwards, the Country Grill is a sensible place to sit down, and Wood Carvings is worth a look if you want to take something home.
