around Whittington

Whittington sits east of Cheltenham on the edge of the Cotswold scarp, and it's the sort of small settlement where the interest lies in the layers rather than the size. Within about two miles you'll find twelve places worth visiting, three spots to eat and drink, and one activities venue, which makes it a good base for a half-day on foot rather than a full day of driving between attractions. Much of what's here is quiet history you come across without ceremony: earthworks in a field, a church beside a manor house, a barrow on a wooded ridge.

A good few hours might begin at the Whittington moated site, where the shape of a medieval enclosure still reads clearly in the ground, before you walk across to St Michael and the Whittington Court Roman villa and old village, a reminder that people have been settling this slope for a very long time. From there you can head up towards Lineover long barrow for the climb and the views back across the vale, or take the gentler option and spend time at Arle Grove before finding lunch nearby.
