Near Andoversford, just east of Cheltenham, you'll find evidence of a substantial Roman agricultural villa that once anchored a prosperous estate in the Cotswolds.
The site was home to grand structures complete with mosaics and bathhouses, discoveries that came to light over the centuries during work at nearby Whittington Court manor. These remains tell us much about how wealthy Roman Britain was and how deeply Roman culture took root in Gloucestershire.
Don't expect to wander around dramatic ruins – most of the structures have been reburied and aren't visible today. What you get instead is something equally worthwhile: a peaceful countryside landscape that invites contemplation about the people who lived and worked here two thousand years ago. The rolling hills that surround the site are the same ones that would have sustained the villa's agricultural operation, and a walk through the gentle terrain gives you a real sense of why Romans chose to settle here. It's the kind of place where history feels present even when it's hidden.
The nearby village of Whittington and the small town of Andoversford serve as comfortable bases if you're spending time in the area. Both have pubs and cafes where you can stop for refreshment. This is a quiet corner of the Cotswolds, perfect for anyone who enjoys discovering layers of history in a calm setting and appreciating the knowledge that important archaeological finds have emerged here over the centuries.
