This ancient earthwork rises above Charlton Kings and represents something genuinely remarkable—a Neolithic long barrow built thousands of years before the Romans ever arrived.
Early farming communities constructed these communal burial monuments as places where their dead were laid to rest, and where rituals likely took place across generations. The sheer effort involved in creating these mounds tells you something important about how seriously these prehistoric people took their relationship with the dead.
Walking around Lineover itself is a straightforward experience. You can appreciate the real physical scale of the structure and spend time thinking about the people who built it, what their world looked like, and why this particular spot mattered enough to them to leave something so substantial behind. The location works well for this too—it sits high enough that you get proper views out across the Cotswold landscape, which makes for a contemplative walk that feels worthwhile beyond just ticking a box.
Access is easy via public footpaths, so you can work your way through pleasant countryside to reach it. The area around Charlton Kings and Cheltenham has accumulated history in layers, so there's plenty more to discover nearby. Once you're done here, you're only a short drive from Charlton Kings or Cheltenham proper, where you'll find cafes, shops, and other things worth your time.
