Cowley

This small village sits in the Churn Valley between Cheltenham and Cirencester, making it an easy detour if you're exploring the central Cotswolds.

With a population of just over 300, Cowley feels genuinely quiet and rural, the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong.

The main draw is St. Mary's Church, a Grade II* listed building that's been standing since the 12th century. Walking around the churchyard gives you a real sense of how these villages have functioned as community centers for nearly 900 years. Right beside the church is Cowley Manor, now a country hotel with an interesting backstory—it was once owned by the Horlicks family, the malted milk drink people, so there's that little piece of industrial heritage tucked into the Cotswolds.

The village name comes from exactly what you'd expect: cow pasture. It's straightforward Anglo-Saxon naming that tells you what this landscape has always been about.

If you're staying in Cheltenham or Cirencester, Cowley makes a peaceful stop for a church visit and a walk around working farmland. You won't need more than an hour or two, but that's rather the point. It's the kind of unassuming place that gives you a genuine feel for what rural Cotswolds life is actually like, without any fuss or fanfare.
