Painswick sits on a Cotswold hillside where the streets are narrow, the stone is pale and the surrounding countryside is never more than a short walk away. It's a place that rewards visitors who aren't in a hurry: within roughly two miles of the centre you'll find seven places to eat and drink, six to visit, four to stay, along with somewhere for events and culture, somewhere for activities and a useful local service or two. That's enough to fill a day without ever feeling that you've had to drive between things, and enough variety that a wet morning and a bright afternoon can both be put to good use.
A good few hours here might begin with coffee and something sweet at The Arts Cafe, followed by a wander out to Cotswold Commons and Beechwoods, where the woodland paths make an easy stretch of the legs. Come back into the village for lunch at The Oak, or head slightly further afield to the Falcon Inn if you fancy a change of scene. Check what's on at the Painswick Centre before you leave — the programme is worth a look.
