Located in Painswick, a stone-built village in the heart of the Cotswolds, it's the sort of base that encourages you to stay for several days rather than just pass through.

Painswick itself has plenty of character. The grey limestone buildings lining the streets tell the story of its past as a wool-trading centre, giving the village a distinctive appearance you'll notice straightaway. It's a place where you can actually slow down, and the Cotswold Way national trail runs right through, so if you're keen on walking, you've got easy access to some excellent routes. The churchyard at St Mary's is unusual in that it contains 99 ancient yew trees, something of a rarity and genuinely worth seeing. The Painswick Rococo Garden is also worth your time — it's one of the few surviving gardens in that 18th-century style and offers something architecturally interesting beyond the typical village attractions.

If you fancy getting out for the day, Stroud is a short drive away with a proper farmers' market and independent shops worth exploring. Cheltenham's Regency architecture is easily accessible, or you could head to Gloucester's cathedral if you want something grander. But honestly, there's enough to occupy you in and around Painswick that you won't feel the need to venture far.
