This hilltop town rose to prosperity during the wool trade, and traces of that weaver's heritage remain visible in the south-facing attic rooms where craftspeople once worked at their looms.
The warm honey-coloured Cotswold stone buildings follow the steep slopes of the hill, creating a maze of intimate lanes that reward wandering. Two things particularly draw people here: the churchyard, which holds a renowned collection of ancient yew trees, and the Painswick Rococo Garden just outside town, an outstanding example of 18th-century garden design and one of England's finest. Sitting on the B4073 between Stroud and Gloucester, it makes a natural stopping point on a journey through the area, with expansive valley views stretching across the landscape below.
