Damsells Cross sits along the Painswick Stream, one of Gloucestershire's working waterways with a genuinely fascinating industrial past.

The stream itself is modest in size, but it once powered an impressive network of mills throughout this valley, particularly during the cloth-making boom of earlier centuries. You can still see evidence of this heritage as you walk through the area—several mill buildings remain, some converted into homes and businesses, while others have been preserved as listed structures that tell the story of the region's textile industry.

The landscape is typical Cotswolds countryside, with rolling hills and woodland backing onto the water. It's an excellent spot for a gentle riverside walk, and the surrounding paths connect you to nearby Painswick, a proper village with shops and services, and to Stroud, a larger market town about three miles south where you'll find more facilities and attractions.

The stream itself is worth exploring—it's still functional today, having been diverted in the 1950s as part of a flood management scheme into the Stroudwater Navigation, an old canal. If you're interested in industrial heritage or local history, there's real substance here to discover. The hamlet's quiet character makes it ideal for those wanting to experience the Cotswolds away from busier spots, with good access to walking routes that follow the valley.
