The Vatch from Swifts Hill. Swifts Hill is a nature reserve owned by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, called the Elliot Nature Reserve after the former owners. The Vatch (vatch=valley) is the small cluster of houses directly below; the town of Stroud can be seen beyond.

Elliott Nature Reserve at Swift's Hill spreads across 22 acres on the eastern edge of the Slad Valley, roughly a mile and a half northeast of Stroud.

The Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust manages the site, which they acquired from a local landowner in the late 1960s, with an additional field later donated by Swift Print of Stroud. It's a place where you can actually see what the Cotswolds' natural heritage consists of rather than just imagining it.

The reserve holds real scientific weight as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, designated because of the geological formations and wildlife found here. Semi-improved pasture and varied habitats support plants and animals that are characteristic of this corner of the Cotswolds, making it genuinely valuable for conservation.

Walking through the reserve lets you experience the valleys and grasslands that have shaped the region across centuries. The paths are straightforward enough for most people regardless of fitness level, and you get a proper sense of how the working Cotswolds landscape actually functions beneath the famous stone villages everyone visits. It's a genuine escape from the busier attractions in and around Stroud while remaining close enough that you can drive into town within minutes for its independent shops, galleries, and cafes whenever you fancy a change of pace.
