around Bisley

Bisley sits high on the wolds above the Toadsmoor and Slad valleys, a working village of steep lanes, Cotswold stone cottages and long views out over the beech woods. It isn't a place that arranges itself around visitors, which is much of its appeal: you'll find people walking dogs, collecting eggs and heading to the pub, and the countryside starts the moment the houses end. Within roughly two miles there are nine places worth visiting, six spots to eat and drink and somewhere to spend an active hour or two, so you can build a day here without ever needing the car for long. Bring boots, because most of what's good is reached on foot.

A sensible few hours might begin with the ancient sites on the common — Money Tump and The Giants Stone both reward the walk out, and the routes between them take you through some quiet, well-hedged farmland. Stancombe Farm Shop is a useful stop for something to carry with you, and Stancombe Farm Livery is nearby if riding appeals. Finish at the Stirrup Cup or The Old Neighbourhood, both within easy reach, for a proper sit-down after the mud.
