Out towards the quiet village of Miserden, you'll find the Giant's Stone, a genuinely ancient landmark that stands out distinctly in the landscape.

This solitary monolith is thought to be a Neolithic standing stone, raised thousands of years before the Romans arrived in Britain. What it was actually for remains a matter of discussion among historians – it may have marked territory, served as a place for ceremonial gatherings, or perhaps aligned with astronomical events that held significance for the people who erected it.

Standing before the stone gives you a real sense of connection to deep prehistory. The walk to reach it takes you across fields, so you'll want sturdy footwear, but it's an enjoyable route through the countryside. Once there, you can take time to appreciate its scale and reflect on the considerable effort those ancient people invested in placing it here. The broader region around Miserden has witnessed plenty of history since – Roman settlements and roads ran through this part of the Cotswolds, and you can still see traces of them scattered across the landscape.

It's a quiet spot for a reflective walk and a chance to absorb the surrounding countryside. The village itself has a pub worth calling into, and if you're looking for more facilities or want to explore local history in greater depth, both Stroud and Cirencester are a short drive away and offer considerably more to discover.
