Avenis Barrow is a Roman burial mound standing on the ridge near Frampton Mansell, where it has remained for nearly two thousand years.
What you're looking at is an earthwork that once served as a final resting place for people living in the area during the Roman occupation of Britain. The Romans deliberately selected this elevated spot for the burial, and while it now appears as little more than a gentle rise in the landscape, the archaeological importance is very real. Walking across an ancient funerary site like this carries genuine weight—you're literally standing where funeral rites took place two millennia ago. The setting itself is remarkably peaceful, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think and take in sweeping views across the rolling Cotswold countryside. It doesn't attract large crowds either, so you're likely to have the space largely to yourself for a proper, unhurried wander. If you want to extend your visit, Frampton Mansell is just a short walk away and makes a natural next stop. Stroud, which has shops, cafes and full facilities, sits nearby too if you're thinking of making a wider day out of exploring the area.
