This small settlement sits high above Chalford village in the Frome Valley, roughly four miles southeast of Stroud in Gloucestershire.
You'll find yourself among traditional stone cottages and farms scattered across rolling countryside, with views down into the valley that really open up the landscape around you.
The area has deep roots in the Cotswolds' textile industry. The valley's water-powered mills once drove a thriving cloth trade, and you can still spot evidence of that heritage in the old buildings dotting the landscape. Walking around, you get a genuine sense of how communities were shaped by that industrial past without feeling like everything's frozen in time.
The real appeal here is the walking. Chalford Hill sits perfectly for exploring the Frome Valley, with footpaths connecting you to neighbouring villages like France Lynch and Bussage. The valley's sometimes called the Golden Valley, partly for its stone buildings that glow in certain light, and partly because it's genuinely rewarding to spend time here. On clear days, the views are really excellent.
It's the kind of place to base yourself for a day if you're exploring this part of the Cotswolds, rather than a specific destination with attractions. Stroud itself is just a short drive away and has shops, cafes and restaurants if you need them. Coming here works well alongside visits to the valley's mills and other villages nearby.
