This section of the Gloucestershire Way starts near Painswick and takes you through landscapes that define the Cotswolds.
The walk alternates between open farmland bordered by dry stone walls and quieter woodland stretches, with enough gentle climbing to feel substantial without exhausting you. As you head towards Painswick Beacon and other high points, you'll get proper views across the Severn Vale, with the Malvern Hills visible in the distance on clear days. The route is well signposted throughout, making it straightforward to follow.
What you're walking through is land shaped by centuries of farming and the wool trade, and you can still feel that history in the landscape around you. The stone walls and field patterns all tell that story.
When you've finished, Painswick village deserves time to explore. The Rococo Garden is worth a proper visit, and St Mary's Church has an extraordinary collection of ancient yews that are genuinely impressive. Both offer good spots to rest and grab refreshments. If you need more substantial facilities or want to stay longer in the area, Stroud is just down the road and has everything you'd need. This walk gives you genuine Cotswold countryside without requiring serious hiking experience or fitness levels.
