This small village south of Gloucester forms part of a civil parish that also includes Whaddon to the north, though Brookthorpe is the one worth your time if you're exploring the Cotswolds.
It sits just beyond the M5 motorway where the landscape begins to rise toward the escarpment, in genuine countryside rather than within Gloucester's suburban reach. You'll find modest stone cottages and the kind of everyday village atmosphere that comes from locals actually living their lives here rather than catering to visitors.
The real draw is location and feel rather than specific sights. You're close enough to pop into Gloucester's cathedral and historic center if you want those things, but distant enough that the place feels properly rural. The Cotswold escarpment is near enough for good walking, with views opening up as you head south toward Painswick and Stroud. The village itself is small—you can wander through in minutes—but that's entirely the point. This gives you an honest sense of ordinary Cotswold village life without the staged tourism you'll find elsewhere.
Whaddon, to the north, has essentially merged into Gloucester's suburbs, so unless you're just passing, Brookthorpe is where you'll actually want to spend time. It works well as a quieter base for exploring the area, or as a pleasant break if you're driving south toward the more celebrated honey-colored villages that sit deeper in the Cotswolds.
