Chipping Campden is the kind of place you can walk end to end in twenty minutes and still find reasons to linger. Its curving high street of honey-coloured stone carries a good deal for a town of its size: within roughly two miles you'll find 14 places to eat and drink, 9 places to stay, 7 shops, 6 things to visit, a couple of useful services and a venue for events and culture. The countryside starts almost immediately, with the escarpment rising to the north-west and footpaths leading out of town within a few minutes of the market hall, so you can combine a morning of pottering with an afternoon on the hills without moving the car.

For a few hours, start with coffee and something baked at Toke's, then give yourself half an hour at Court Barn, where the collections cover the designers and craftspeople who settled in and around the town. Drive or walk up to Dover's Hill for the view across the Vale of Evesham, then come back down for an unhurried lunch at the Crystal Palace.
