This market town showcases some of the finest Cotswold architecture you'll encounter anywhere.
The High Street is genuinely striking, lined with honey-coloured stone buildings ranging from medieval times through to the 17th century. Walking its length feels like moving backwards through several centuries, with the limestone facades warming in the afternoon light.
The town's wealth came from the medieval wool trade. Prosperous merchants built impressive structures here as monuments to their success, and many of these buildings now house independent shops, galleries, and cafes while keeping their original character intact. St James Church deserves a visit for its beautiful interior and the impressive merchant tombs it contains.
If you enjoy walking, Chipping Campden marks the northern starting point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile trail running down to Bath. Even without committing to the entire route, the surrounding countryside offers plenty of excellent walks through rolling hills.
The whole town centre has conservation area status, which has prevented modern development and preserved its authentic atmosphere. You're about fifteen minutes from Moreton-in-Marsh, and the town works well as a base for exploring this part of Gloucestershire. It draws visitors regularly, especially at weekends, so you might prefer visiting on quieter days for a more relaxed experience.
