A short walk from Chipping Campden, Dover's Hill offers both striking views across the Cotswolds and a genuine connection to local history worth exploring.
From the hilltop you can see far out across the rolling countryside—the views alone make it worth the easy stroll, and it's a natural place to stop for photographs.
What really sets Dover's Hill apart is its past. A local lawyer named Robert Dover started organizing athletic games here in the early 1600s with royal backing from King James I. These weren't events for the wealthy alone. People from all walks of life—laborers, farmers, nobility—came together to wrestle, run, and compete in various contests. The games continued for centuries, became less regular by the 1800s, then were revived in 1963. They still happen every year on the Friday after Spring Bank Holiday, so depending on when you visit, you might catch them in action.
It's one of those places that shows how communities have always found ways to gather and celebrate physical competition. Chipping Campden is just a mile away and has all the shops, restaurants, and accommodation you could need, so it's easy to combine a visit here with time exploring the town itself. Even without catching the games, the views and the history make it worth the walk.
