in Mickleton

Mickleton has a handful of things worth building a visit around. Kiftsgate Court Gardens and Hidcote Manor Garden sit side by side on the hill above the village, about a mile and a half away by a steep lane, and both reward a slow wander. Hidcote was created by Lawrence Johnston and is now cared for by the National Trust. Kiftsgate is privately owned, describes itself as the creation of three generations of women gardeners, and opens to visitors in season, so check its dates before you go. If you visit Hidcote, the National Trust Gift Shop is worth a proper look rather than a quick pass-through on your way out.

History of a different kind sits on the skyline to the north at Meon Hill Multivallate Hillfort, an Iron Age hillfort and scheduled monument just over the Warwickshire border. There is no confirmed public path onto the earthworks, so treat it as something to see from the waymarked paths below rather than a place to climb to.

For a drink or a meal without straying far, the Kings Arms Inn is on the High Street in the middle of Mickleton and works as a lunch stop between the gardens and a walk.

Mickleton works well as a walking base. The Heart of England Way, a long-distance path linking Cannock Chase with Bourton-on-the-Water, runs through the village, arriving from the Quintons to the north and continuing south towards Chipping Campden. You can follow it in either direction for as long as you like and turn back, or use it as the spine of a longer day.

The ground rises sharply south-east of the village towards Hidcote Bartrim and Hidcote Boyce, so a walk up to the gardens is a steep climb of about a mile and a half. Take care wherever you share narrow lanes with traffic. To the west and north lies the flatter country of the Vale of Evesham.

Meon Hill Multivallate Hillfort stands on the hill north of the village. The Way passes below it, but there is no confirmed public path onto the Iron Age earthworks themselves, so keep to waymarked rights of way. Paths here cross working farmland: expect mud after rain, and keep dogs on a lead near livestock.

The Kings Arms Inn is on the High Street in the middle of Mickleton and is the obvious choice if you want a pub meal alongside a drink. Three Ways House Hotel, also in the village, says its restaurant and bar welcome people who are not staying, and it is the home of the Pudding Club. For tea and cake, Decades Tearooms is on Broadway Road, a short way from the centre.

Two more cafés are up the hill at Hidcote Manor Garden, about a mile and a half away. Winthrop's Café is inside the garden and serves cakes, scones, sandwiches and drinks, so plan it as part of a garden visit. Barn Café is the National Trust's takeaway kiosk in the thatched barn by the plant centre, and it opens only at busier times in summer.

To the north, Lower Clopton Cafe is the café at Lower Clopton Farm Shop near Upper Quinton, over the border in Warwickshire, alongside a farm shop and butchery. It does not open every day, so check before you set out.

If you'd rather stay over than pass through, Mickleton has two places to stay on our list. Three Ways House Hotel is in the village itself, a few minutes' walk from the High Street, and sits handily between Stratford-upon-Avon and Chipping Campden if you want to range further afield on other days. The hotel is the home of the Pudding Club, which it says was founded to preserve the great British pudding, and its restaurant and bar are open to non-residents as well as guests.

Brymbo B&B is the quieter alternative, a family-run bed-and-breakfast on Honeybourne Lane, roughly three-quarters of a mile from the centre of the village. Its own site mentions ground-floor rooms.

Either works as a point to return to after walking, visiting Hidcote or Kiftsgate, or a day in Chipping Campden or Stratford.

Mickleton sits close to several smaller places worth knowing about. Hidcote Bartrim and Hidcote Boyce are both a little over a mile away as the crow flies, up the hill to the south-east. Hidcote Manor Garden is at Hidcote Bartrim, with Hidcote Boyce a short distance further south. Aston-sub-Edge lies under two miles to the south-west, and Meon Vale is about two miles to the north.

For a bigger day out, Chipping Campden is about three miles to the south, with its own shops and character worth a spare few hours. Stratford-upon-Avon is seven or eight miles to the north if Shakespeare connections interest you, and offers a different pace entirely from Mickleton's quieter village life.

None of these demands a whole day's detour on its own; most work as an add-on to a morning or afternoon already spent around Mickleton, whether that's a garden, a short walk, or simply a change of scenery before heading back for tea.
