This small hamlet sits right on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire border, just a short drive southwest of Chipping Campden.

Most visitors come here for one reason: Hidcote Manor Garden, one of Britain's most significant gardens of the twentieth century and a place that fundamentally changed how people approach garden design.

Lawrence Johnston created the garden starting in 1907, introducing an idea that was genuinely innovative at the time. He divided the space into a series of distinct garden "rooms", each separated by hedges and walls, each with its own mood and character. You might move from formal geometric layouts into wild, naturalistic plantings, all connected by pathways that naturally draw you forward and invite you to explore. Throughout the garden you'll encounter rare trees, unusual shrubs, and herbaceous borders that show real care in their composition. It's become a place designers and serious gardeners come back to again and again, though even if plants aren't your usual interest, the way Johnston thought about space and movement makes it well worth your time.

The National Trust manages the property and welcomes visitors regularly. Set aside a good few hours to walk around properly and absorb what he was doing. The hamlet itself is quite small with limited facilities, but its location works well if you're spending time across the wider Cotswolds. Chipping Campden nearby has everything you might need—shops, restaurants, and places to stay are all readily available.
