around Chedworth

Chedworth sits in a fold of the Cotswold hills, a long, straggling village of stone cottages strung along a valley side with woods rising behind it. It's a quiet place, and that's rather the point: the roads in are narrow, the views are of sheep pasture and beech hanger, and the interest here is layered rather than obvious. Within a couple of miles you'll find seven places worth visiting, four spots to eat and drink, and somewhere to stay if you'd rather not rush away. Much of what draws people is very old indeed — Roman remains, prehistoric burial mounds on the high ground, a medieval church — so it suits anyone happy to combine a bit of walking with a bit of history.

A good half-day starts at Chedworth Roman Villa, where the mosaics and bath house repay a slow look, then continues into Chedworth Woods to find the site of the Roman temple. From there you can climb towards Royal Oak round barrow for the wider view, before dropping back into the village for Saint Andrew's and a well-earned pint and plate at The 7 Tuns.
