In the woodlands near Chedworth village, you'll find the remains of a Roman temple complex that tells you something important about how people worshipped during the Roman occupation of Britain.
This wasn't someone's home, but an actual place of worship where rituals happened and offerings were made, likely honouring local gods alongside Roman ones. Walking around the site, you can make out the foundations of the temple building itself and other structures that probably provided shelter for priests or people who came to pray.
What's striking about this place is how it demonstrates Roman influence spreading through the Cotswolds even in quieter, more remote areas. The major Roman city of Corinium Dobunnorum, which we now call Cirencester, wasn't far away, and this temple shows just how far that cultural reach extended. The National Trust looks after the site today.
Getting there involves a walk through managed woodland, which actually works in its favour. The journey contributes to the peaceful atmosphere you experience when you arrive, and you'll typically find fewer people here than at some other Roman sites nearby. If you're after authentic history presented in natural surroundings rather than behind glass in a visitor centre, this suits that preference well. The village of Chedworth itself is worth a look, and Northleach and Yanworth are both close by if you want somewhere for a meal or want to explore a bit further while you're in the area.
