Northleach is a working market town situated in the River Leach valley, roughly ten miles northeast of Cirencester and eleven miles from Cheltenham.

Its character was shaped during the medieval period when it became a significant centre for wool trading, and that heritage remains evident as you wander the broad High Street with its substantial stone buildings from those prosperous times.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul commands the town centre and deserves a visit for its impressive Perpendicular Gothic design and the remarkable collection of brass monuments inside, many installed by the wealthy wool merchants whose patronage made the building possible. The Market Square preserves its original layout, though the volume of trade that once animated it has long since diminished.

What makes Northleach distinctive today is that it functions primarily as a place where locals live and work rather than existing mainly for visitors. This authenticity shows itself in the independent shops, the variety of cafes and pubs where residents actually gather, and the general sense of a genuine community. The Cotswold Water Park lies just a short drive away if you want to incorporate more activities into your visit, and the surrounding countryside provides excellent walking with numerous footpaths crossing rolling fields and quiet lanes.

The town works well as a base for exploring central Cotswolds, offering more convenient access to smaller villages than the larger, busier market towns nearby. You'll get an honest sense of how people genuinely live and move through the region from here.
