This 12th-century church stands in the small village of Hampnett, a few miles southeast of Northleach in Gloucestershire.
St George is a Grade I listed building that genuinely demonstrates what medieval craftsmanship and faith look like when carved into stone.
Spending time inside reveals why the place has endured. Much of the original character survives despite the centuries, with architectural features spanning from Norman foundations through later periods. You get that quality old stone churches have, where light filters through ancient windows and the air feels thick with accumulated time.
Hampnett itself is small and rural, which is entirely by design. There's no visitor center or café here, and that actually works in its favor—it feels genuine rather than arranged for visitors. The village sits in rolling countryside typical of this part of the Cotswolds, with good walking available if you want to stretch your legs before or after looking around.
Getting there by car is straightforward. Northleach, about four miles away, is the nearest place with proper services including shops and restaurants. Bourton-on-the-Water and Cheltenham are both within reasonable driving distance if you're building a longer day around the area. The church is usually open during daylight hours, though it's worth checking locally during winter when darkness comes early.
