This village sits right in the heart of the Cotswolds, spread across a gentle valley where the River Windrush runs through the main street.

What really sets it apart is how the water becomes part of everyday life here — the shallow river flows alongside the high street, and during summer you can simply wade through it without any fuss.

The buildings are that distinctive honey-coloured Cotswold stone that catches the afternoon light beautifully, with shops, pubs, and tea rooms lining the main thoroughfare. You'll find a solid museum on the High Street exploring local history, and if vintage cars interest you, the Motor Museum merits an hour or two. The stone bridges crossing the river offer excellent photo opportunities, and the location works well as a base for countryside walks into the surrounding hills.

The village developed as a coaching stop between Oxford and Worcester, which explains its relative prosperity and well-established character compared to smaller settlements nearby. The conservation area keeps the centre's character intact, so modern developments haven't disrupted the traditional feel.

Cheltenham is roughly twenty minutes away, making it straightforward to reach without the overwhelming crowds you might find at more famous spots. Summer weekends do draw day-trippers, so a weekday morning visit tends to offer a more peaceful experience if that appeals to you.
