Bampton sits on the western edge of Oxfordshire, a stone-built village of quiet lanes and wide verges that rewards an unhurried visit. It's a place where the day tends to shape itself around a coffee, a wander and a long lunch rather than a fixed itinerary. Within roughly two miles you'll find twelve places to eat and drink, four shops, four places to stay and one activity provider — enough to fill a day comfortably, but not so much that you'll feel you're missing something. If you're touring the wider Cotswolds, Bampton works well as a base or as a gentle stop between busier villages.

A good few hours here might start with breakfast or a mid-morning stop at Bampton Coffee House, then a slow circuit of the village on foot, taking in the churchyard and the older streets. From there, Bampton Garden Centre is worth an hour if you like plants, pots and a browse with no particular purpose. Come lunchtime or early evening, The Talbot Hotel is the obvious choice for something substantial, while The Morris Clown suits an unfussy pint and a seat among locals.
