Kelmscott is a small village on the upper Thames, the kind of place where the lanes run out into water meadows and the loudest thing you'll hear is the river. Most people come for its association with William Morris, but the surroundings reward a slower look: within about two miles you'll find five places to visit, two spots for walking and outdoor activity, two places to eat and drink, and one useful local service. It suits a half-day rather than a rushed stop, and it works best if you're happy to walk between things rather than move the car every twenty minutes.

A good few hours might begin at Kelmscott Manor, Morris's summer home, with time afterwards in the Kelmscott Manor Park and Garden, where the planting and the setting explain a good deal about his work. From there it's a short wander to Saint George, the village church, before lunch or a drink at The Plough at Kelmscott. If you've energy left, pick up the Thames River Walk at Buscot for an easy riverside stretch, or carry on to Buscot Park for its house, grounds and collections.
