This limestone manor house dates from around 1570 and sits in the quiet village of Kelmscott, just a short drive south of Lechlade towards the River Thames.

What makes it special is its connection to William Morris, the influential writer, designer and socialist who made it his country home from 1871 until his death in 1896. You can feel his creative presence throughout the house and grounds.

Visiting gives you a real sense of how Morris lived and worked. You'll walk through the rooms where he spent time, seeing furniture, textiles and decorative pieces that reflect his design philosophy and commitment to craftsmanship. The house itself is understated—a Grade I listed building with the original limestone structure plus a late 17th-century wing that adds character without trying too hard.

The location is part of the appeal. Being close to the Thames and surrounded by gentle Cotswolds landscape, you can understand why Morris valued retreating here from his London life. The village has stayed small and relatively unchanged, which helps preserve that sense of stepping back in time.

You'll need to visit by guided tour, so check opening times before heading over. It's well worth planning a trip if you're interested in design history, Morris's life, or simply want to experience a significant manor house in a genuinely peaceful spot.
