A riverside walk along the Thames through one of its finest stretches, this route takes you through Buscot village and beyond, following England's most celebrated river through genuinely rural landscape despite its proximity to Oxford and Swindon.

The path winds past Buscot Lock, where you can observe working river traffic in action, and opens into meadowland on either side that feels like real countryside rather than tended parkland.

Buscot itself is modest and unpretentious, which is exactly what makes it appealing. The village has a notable church and Buscot Park, a National Trust property housing an impressive art collection if you want to combine walking with cultural interest. The house sits back from the riverbank but is worth factoring into your visit.

The walk is relatively flat and suits most fitness levels, taking anything from an hour to a half day depending on your ambition. Early mornings are particularly rewarding for wildlife watching. The path is well-maintained but can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are sensible.

You can easily pair this with time in Lechlade, a working market town just upstream with pubs and proper shops, or continue downstream toward Oxford. It's one of those walks that makes you appreciate why this river has mattered so deeply to people across centuries.
