The Double Red Duke is a country pub in Clanfield, a village on the quieter eastern reaches of the Cotswolds, and it works just as well as a place to stay overnight as it does for a casual meal.
The kitchen takes pride in its straightforward approach to cooking, with steaks cooked over an open fire being a real draw, and the menu changes regularly to keep things interesting alongside these signature dishes. Weekend evenings tend to fill up nicely, creating a genuine buzz without any sense of contrivance—it's the kind of atmosphere that works whether you're dropping in for lunch or making an evening of it.
The bedrooms upstairs are comfortable and thoughtfully designed, providing a proper base for exploring the surrounding area. What works about this place is its lack of pretension—it's simply somewhere friendly where you can unwind after spending the day walking through the Cotswolds countryside. Clanfield puts you in good striking distance of Burford, known for its appealing high street, and Bampton, which has become familiar to many through television filming. The River Thames flows nearby at Lechlade if you fancy a riverside walk. It's the sort of place that captures what draws many people to the region: honest hospitality, decent food, and somewhere comfortable to lay your head.
