This town sits where the River Windrush cuts through the Cotswolds, and it genuinely rewards a stop whether you're coming from Oxford or pushing deeper into the hills.

Many people refer to it as the gateway to the region, and you'll understand why once you arrive—it has all the appeal that brings people to the Cotswolds without the crowds that can overwhelm other spots.

The high street runs through the center with honey-colored stone buildings spanning several centuries, backed by independent shops, tea rooms, and pubs where you'll see familiar faces. The Church of Saint John the Baptist rises prominently above the roofline and deserves a visit if medieval architecture interests you. A small museum documents the town's history reaching back to Anglo-Saxon times, when it served as a fortified settlement controlling a river crossing—something you can still feel in the layout of the streets.

The location makes it an excellent base. Oxford lies eighteen miles away with its museums and colleges. Cheltenham sits about twenty-two miles in the opposite direction. Nearby Witney and Woodstock are within easy reach. The surrounding countryside offers solid walking routes, the Cotswold Water Park is a short drive south, and the River Windrush itself provides pleasant paths where families and dogs regularly wander.

What sets it apart is that it functions as a real town rather than a historic display. That practical character is much of the appeal.
