As you enter this historic market town, you're immediately struck by its impressive main street.

It gently slopes down towards the River Windrush, lined on both sides by centuries-old buildings crafted from local stone. This wide street reflects its past importance as a busy coaching stop on the route from Oxford to the West Country, and today it’s still bustling with independent shops, inviting tea rooms, and traditional pubs.

Take your time to explore, perhaps finding a unique antique or a local craft. A must-see is the magnificent St John the Baptist Church at the top of the hill. Its size speaks to the town's prosperity during the medieval wool trade. This church also holds a poignant chapter in English history, having served as a prison for Leveller soldiers during the English Civil War in 1649, some of whom were executed in its churchyard. From the bottom of the hill, you can stroll along the river before heading back up to continue your exploration. It’s a wonderful spot to base yourself for discovering more of Oxfordshire’s Cotswolds, with charming villages like Fulbrook, Upton, Signet, Widford, Taynton, and Swinbrook all close by, offering delightful walks and further local experiences.
