This tiny settlement sits just half a mile west of Swinbrook in West Oxfordshire, making it one of the smallest inhabited places in the Cotswolds.
You'll find it about two miles from Burford, a larger market town that serves as the nearest hub for shops and services. The hamlet is essentially a few scattered stone cottages and farms spread across the countryside, bordered by the River Windrush.
There's not much here in the conventional sense of attractions, which is actually the whole appeal. Widford offers genuine peace and quiet, ideal for walkers wanting to explore the river valley without encountering crowds. The surrounding landscape is classic Cotswold countryside, with rolling fields, dry stone walls, and woodland. The area is excellent for rambling along the Windrush, particularly if you combine it with nearby Swinbrook, where you can see the distinctive Fettiplace family tombs in the church.
Most visitors come as part of a wider walking route rather than making Widford their only stop. It's best appreciated on foot, allowing you to soak in the rural atmosphere and spot local wildlife along the waterway. You'll need a car to reach it comfortably, though it's worth the drive if you're after a genuine slice of working countryside life away from the busier tourist routes. Nearby Burford provides accommodation and dining options if you're basing yourself in the area.
