Monkton Farleigh sits on the high ground east of Bath, a small stone village of quiet lanes and long views where the countryside still does most of the talking. It isn't a place you come to for a packed itinerary, and that's rather the point. Within a couple of miles you'll find eleven places to eat and drink, three places to stay, three things to visit, two activity providers, a shop and a local service — enough to fill a day comfortably without ever feeling hurried. The village's disused mines are part of its history, a reminder that this stretch of hillside was worked for its stone long before walkers arrived to enjoy the footpaths above the Avon valley.

A good few hours here might begin with breakfast or coffee at Hartley Farm, where the farm shop is worth a browse before you set off. From there, follow the lanes and field paths, taking in the views back towards Bath, then reward yourself at The American Garden Deli or at Twenty Five. If you're staying longer, The Blackberries Camping Park puts you within easy reach of it all, and Bathford Nurseries is a pleasant stop on the way home.
