Just a short drive from Bath, you'll discover the only museum outside the United States devoted entirely to American decorative arts and culture.

The American Museum is housed in Claverton Manor, an elegant Georgian building that serves as a striking backdrop for its collections. Inside, period rooms have been carefully recreated to show how Americans lived and decorated their homes from the 17th century through the 20th, featuring everything from early colonial style and Shaker furniture to folk art and quilts.

The museum was founded by two Americans, Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn, who wanted to share their country's artistic heritage with British audiences. The grounds are substantial and worth your time too. You'll find an impressive arboretum, a recreation of George Washington's garden from Mount Vernon, and a natural play area if you're visiting with children. It's an excellent place for a walk, particularly on fine days. Most visitors spend a good half-day here, moving between the house and grounds, and the on-site cafe makes it easy to refuel. The location near Bath means it works well as part of a broader day out in the region, and you won't need much more than 20 minutes to drive there from the city center.
