This small hamlet sits in a quiet valley between Winchcombe and Broadway, made up of just a handful of stone cottages and farms strung along country lanes.
What sets Conkwell apart is its strong connection to Edward Guy Dawber, one of the most significant Cotswolds architects of the early twentieth century. Dawber designed several buildings here, and his work reflects the Arts and Crafts movement's commitment to using local materials and traditional construction techniques. As you walk around, you'll spot his careful attention to stonework and the proportions he favoured in the buildings throughout the hamlet.
The best way to experience Conkwell is as part of a wider exploration of the surrounding area. It's genuinely remote, so there are no shops or services here, though many people find that part of its appeal. The countryside around it has excellent walking routes, particularly heading toward Sudeley Castle or along the River Isbourne. Winchcombe is about three miles away and has everything you need for a day out, plus its own medieval buildings worth seeing. Broadway is equally close by and offers a quite different atmosphere with its broad main street full of galleries and cafes.
If you care about Arts and Crafts design or Cotswolds architecture, a leisurely walk through Conkwell's lanes is rewarding. The hamlet demonstrates how thoughtful design can improve a landscape without overwhelming it. Spring and early summer are especially good times to visit, when the stone catches the warm light of longer evenings.
