Box sits between Bath and Corsham, and it rewards visitors who slow down. Within about two miles of the village centre you'll find twelve places to eat and drink, two places to visit, one activities venue and one listed under services, which tells you something about the character of the place: this is somewhere to graze, wander and chat rather than tick off a list of attractions. The scale is comfortable. You can park up, walk between most of what you want to see, and still have time to sit with a coffee and watch the village go about its day.

A good few hours might start with breakfast or a mid-morning stop at The Birdhouse Cafe, then a browse at The Veg Shed to pick up something for later or for the journey home. R J Hill & Son is worth knowing about if you're putting together a picnic or looking for provisions with a local connection. Make time for Box Rock Circus, which gives the village a distinctive focal point, and if you're staying into the evening, The Bengal Bear is the obvious place to end up.
